5th Grade Student in Penguins Commercial
As the Stanley Cup excitement spreads through Pittsburgh, one of our fifth grade students is helping to cheer on the Pens to bring the Stanley Cup back to the 'burgh!  Click below to view the Children's Hospital Penguins commercial. Ryan Heckathorn is featured in this commercial.  He is in a clip towards the end of the commercial in a grey Adidas t-shirt.  Great job Ryan and let's go Pens!

BHS K.E.Y. Club Make A Wish Foundation Raffle
The BHS K.E.Y. Club is holding its annual raffle to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation.  The items being raffled are pictured left: Pittsburgh Steelers Assortment of 12 Terrible Towels, 3’ x 5’  banner, ball cap, scarf, beach towel, license plate, magnet and face tattoos in a Steeler bag. The cost of the tickets is $1 each or 6 for $5. Drawing will be held at 7:45 am on June 7 on the BHS TV announcements. Tickets will be available for purchase in each of the school building offices or by contacting Mrs. Oravitz at oravitzb@bsd.k12.pa.us



2013 Keystone Exam Schedule
On May 7, all BHS students received information regarding the upcoming Keystone Exams schedule.  The letter indicated any exams that each student must complete along with the dates of these exams.  Keystone testing will take place on May 13, 14, 15, 16, 20, and 21 from 7:30-9:30 each morning.  Following testing, the high school will follow a two-hour delay schedule.

School buses will run according to the regular schedule and students that must take these exams must report at the regular time, 7:30 A.M.

Students that are not taking the Keystone Exams:

1.      May make their own arrangements for transportation and arrive no later than 9:30 A.M.  OR

2.      May take the bus and will report to study halls during the testing sessions.

BHS Named Top 1500 Most Challenging High Schools in America
Blackhawk High School was named one of the top 1500 most challenging high schools in the nation and ranks 28th in Pennsylvania.  Click here to read an article about this designation.

Chesapeake Energy's "Discovering Tomorrow's Leaders"
Three students from Blackhawk were recognized in Chesapeake Energy's "Discovering Tomorrow's Leaders" program for being leaders at school, at home, and in the community.  They were Rachel Denny (12th grade), Eric Racan (12th grade), and Mia Bartoles (5th grade).  They were among 8 students recognized in Beaver County.  Each student won 3 iPad minis for their school and were recognized at a banquet on April 23.  The following video was created by Chesapeake Energy and was presented at the banquet. Congratulations to these outstanding students!

Summer Camp for Girls

The summer LEGO robotics camp will introduce girls to building and programming robots using Lego Mindstorms NXT.  During camp, girls will learn mechanical design, construction, programming, and team work skills.  They will work in small teams using LEGO blocks, motors and sensors.  After designing the robot, students will program their robot to move, react and make sounds in order to solve challenges.  Camp is open to girls currently in grades 6-11.  Click the following link for more information and registration form.  Email any questions you may have to mccowinh@bsd.k12.pa.us, menscha@bsd.k12.pa.us, or woodwardm@bsd.k12.pa.us.

Blackhawk will implement BYOT in 2013-14 School Year
Blackhawk will implement a BYOT initiative (Bring Your Own Technology) at Highland Middle School and will pilot this initiative at Blackhawk High School beginning in the 2013-14 school year.  Bring your own technology will allow students to use their own personal technology devices to support their learning during instruction.  Click on the link below to view a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document regarding this initiative.

London, Ireland, Wales, Paris Trip
Travel Club will be visiting London, Paris, Wales, and Ireland in 2014. We will have a parent meeting on Thursday, February 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the High School library. 3rd Annual BSD Swim Team Splash Off
The 3rd Annual BSD Swim Team Splash Off event will be held on Friday May 31 from 6:00-8:00PM.  This event is special, because current and former BSD Swim Team members, coaches, and Blackhawk teachers all compete!  For more information, please click here.   
BHS School Store
School Store is now open during lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays to offer school supplies and gum.  Due to low demand, the after school sales have been suspended until Spring sports resume.
